 Happy 4th of July

By David Crane

As I write this the country is still under siege of the Corona virus and faces protests in every town.  I really wish my folks were still alive to give me the perspective of the protests and riots they experienced when they were teachers in Kansas City in the 60’s.  I think they would feel, as do the protestors, that it seems the country is having a hard time moving forward with the changes we need.

Here at the store we hear mostly pleasant conversations about all the travels that families have gone on now that Missouri has loosened its guidelines, about their first time experiences here at the store, and the ups and downs of our small community. Every now and again we do hear about opinions and thoughts that are better kept to themselves.  My belief is that if you have to look around to see if anyone is listening to your story, then you probably shouldn’t say it. Is this cancel culture? Sure, if that's what you want to call it, but really we are just tired of the rudeness and want everyone to be accepting. We pride ourselves at serving everyone and treating everyone the same. WE LOVE OUR CUSTOMERS, no matter who they are or what they believe in. We are fortunate enough to live in a community that at least seems to be integrated and accepting, and we try our best here at Cranes Store to care for all equality. Can we do better? I’m sure we can, and we try to learn every day, as should everyone.

With the Covid-19 pandemic still affecting the world, we are going to keep up the plexiglass in the store for the foreseeable future.  We will be using lots of gloves, spraying disinfectant constantly, and scooping the candy for our customers.  We encourage mask wearing.  We know of people that have had the disease. They have reported symptoms of stabbing pain and feelings of drowning which doesn’t sound like something anyone should want.

We hope everyone has a safe and Happy 4th of July.  We will have shortened hours on the 4th.  Then we look forward to big milestones in August.  Shanellen is getting married, school restarts, and David has a birthday!
